My Diary: Code Mixing & Switching
CODE MIXING AND SWITCHING
Code Mixing
Code
mixing is the change of one language to another within the same utterance or in
the same oral/written text. It is a common phenomenon in societies in which two
or more languages are used, usually without a change of topic.
Actually,
in code – mixing we just take word by word from other language. it means we
keep to our own language but just adding some words from others caused by some
factors.
Code
mixing is divided into two parts such as, inner and outer. Inner code mixing is
originated from the native language with its all variations. For instance,
combination between indonesia and minang language; “alah pikun awak ko”. While outer code mixing is a combination between a foreign language with native language such
as English combinated with indonesia; “ penerbangan ku delay cok, tunggulah sebentar yah..?.”
Code Switching
Code
switching is the alternation of the use of at least two languages or their
varieties or styles in the same conversation in bilingual community. Bilingual people
often switch codes from one language to other language when they speak or
write.
Code
switching does not only occur in the form f language change but also may happen
in the change of the variant of language.
Q: What is benefit using code switching and mixing? (Mike Yulfa Achmi)
A: There
are so many benefits obtained from learning it, such as :
ü A
code-switcher, by being fluent in multiple cultures / languages , can access
each of those environments without imposing a foreign culture/language.
ü Code-switching gives its users a more nuanced and
tolerant view of world cultures, as their lives are spent jumping between
different context— each one containing different cultural assumptions and
expectations.
ü It allows the code-switcher to become a cultural
connector
ü It opens up many opportunities for the code -
switcher.
Q: Is it suitable for us use code mixing at
school (in daily activity)? (Dela Safitri)
A: It is suitable if we use it in
our daily activities, but we have to filter every words when we use code
mixing. Because there are some words that is impolite for using and hearing.
