PAST TENSE IN ACTIVE FORM
Simple Past Tense
Formula :
Verbal : Subject + Verb 2 + Object + Complement
Non Verbal : Subject + Was/were+ Complement
Function : To express an event that was happened or finished in the past.
Example :
Verbal
(+) The nurse went to the hospital yesterday
(-) The nurse did not go to the hospital yesterday
(?) Did the nurse go to the hospital yesterday ?
(-?) did not the nurse go to the hospital yesterday?
Non Verbal
(+) They were not bad kid
(-) They were not bad kid
(?) Were They bad kid ?
(-?) Were not they bad kid ?
Past Progressive / Continuous Tense
Formula :
Verbal : Subject + was/were+ Verb Ing + Complement
Non Verbal : Subject + was/were+being + Complement
Function : To express an action that was going at the time on the past.
Example :
Verbal :
(+) They were working when I called them
(-) They were not working when i called them
(+?) Were They working when I called them?
(-?) Were not They working when I called them?
Non Verbal :
(+) She was being sad when She saw him go away
(-) She was not being sad when She saw him go away
(+?) Was she being sad when She saw him go away?
(-?) Was not she being sad when She saw him go away?
Past Perfect Tense
Formula :
Verbal : Subject + had + Verb 3 + Complement
Non Verbal : Subject + had + been + Complement
Function : To express an action that was happened or finished before another action happened in the past
Example
Verbal :
(+) She had studied English lamguage before she moved to London
(-) She had not studied English language before she moved to London
(+?) Had she studied English language before she moved to London?
(-?) Had not she studied English lamguage before she moved to London
Non Verbal :
(+) Marsha had been a doctor in this hospital before She went to Europe
(-) Marsha had not been a doctor in this hospital before She went to Europe
(+?) Had Marsha been a doctor in this hospital before She went to Europe ?
(-?) Had not Marsha been a doctor in this hospital before She went to Europe ?
Past Perfect Continuous / Progressive Tense
Formula :
Verbal : Subject + had + Been + Verb ing + Complement
Non Verbal : Subject + had + been + being + Complement
Function : To express an event that had happened and still on going at the time in the past.
Example :
Verbal :
(+) Rasya had been working at the international hospital for five years when he got the promotion
(-) Rasya had not been working at the international hospital for five years when he got the promotion
(+?) Had Rasya been working at the international hospital for five years when he got the promotion ?
(-?) Had not Rasya been working at the international hospital for five years when he got the promotion?
Non Verbal :
(+) He had been being there for thirty minutes last month.
(-) He had not been being there for thirty minutes last month.
(+?) Had he been being there for thirty minutes last month?
(-?) Had not he been being there for thirty minutes last month?
